Rosemary has recently been accepted as a Music Lecturer by MANCENT – the Manchester Continuing Education Network. (http://mancent.org.uk). From the Spring of 2020 she will be offering one-day study courses on musical topics, based in South Manchester. More details will be available in the Autumn, but the first term will feature two one-day courses on the piano sonatas of Beethoven – in recognition of the 250th anniversary of his birth. The two days will be bookable separately, but will cover between them the magnificent sequence of thirty-two sonatas which span the composer’s lifetime.
When Beethoven was born, the piano sonata was a gentle entertainment for ladies to play in their family circle. By the end of Beethoven’s life it had become a ground-breaking form, comparable to the symphony in its scope, intensity and virtuosity. At the same time, the construction of the piano was revolutionised and came very close to the concert instrument we treasure today. The courses will investigate these changes and give ample opportunity for discussion of the impact of the sonatas in Beethoven’s timeĀ – and today.
Please contact Rosemary via this website if you would like to receive advance details of these courses.
