Mornings with a Masterpiece – Schubert

Our journey through chamber music steps a little further into the 19th century as we turn our attention to Schubert. My Zoom music course for the summer term will focus on the larger chamber works: the ‘Trout’ Quintet for piano and strings, the Octet (wind and strings) and the celebrated String Quintet in C, from the last months of the composer’s life.

As the Octet was commissioned as a companion piece to the very popular Beethoven Septet we shall look back at that work as well. It gives us a fascinating comparison of the two composers, both residing in Vienna but with very different musical experiences.

Most of the music is joyful, reflecting Schubert’s happy association with friends and patrons. The String Quintet has a darker side as the composer came to terms with his failing health, although barely out of his twenties.

The course runs in May on two Thursdays (8th and 15th) and is repeated in June on two Thursdays (9th and 16th). You can mix and match the dates if that is more convenient. Full details are here
