Shostakovich Chamber Music: Private Conversations
Shostakovich lived in dangerous times. His more public works – symphonies and opera – brought him widespread acclaim which twice turned to devastating condemnation. He was periodically robbed of his teaching posts and access to performance, and was lucky to escape with his life. Yet throughout this turmoil he continued to express himself privately in his chamber music.
He was supported by a remarkable friendship with one group, the Beethoven String Quartet, for whom he wrote almost all of his chamber works. For the works with piano, he joined them as a performing member of the ensemble. We shall explore a selection of the resulting works, spread over a period of more than thirty years. Shostakovich was always reluctant to express himself in words, but if we are to know any of his inner thoughts, we may find them expressed in the music.
