Haydn – the surprises of the string quartets

Haydn’s ‘Surprise Symphony’ is well known – although the joke still works for the unwary in the concert hall. My latest talks in the series ‘Mornings with a Masterpiece’ will focus on Haydn’s String Quartets, and they turn out to be just as full of unexpected developments: not so much loud noises, but experiments with form, texture, and tonality. There is even one movement which modulates so freely that he does not write a key signature.

I have chosen two sets of quartets, Opus 20 and Opus 76, written twenty-five years apart, and we shall meet to discuss them on the mornings of October 10th and 17th 2024.
