Exploring Handel in May

My series of Zoom music talks, Mornings with a Masterpiece, will continue in May with

Handel the Dramatist – two oratorios

On two Thursdays – May 16th and 23rd we shall turn our attention to Handel, and to the wonderfully dramatic music he wrote in his oratorios. In this form, practically invented by Handel, he made up for the lack of scenery, costume and action with exciting and emotional music which retains all of its force today.

I have chosen an early example – Acis and Galatea – and a late one – Jephtha, – which will illustrate his development as a composer over more than thirty years. Our discoveries will also throw an interesting light on Messiah – Handel’s most famous, most loved and most untypical oratorio.

I hope you will join me, and the conversation.
