A Summer of Song

Rosemary will be offering two new online music courses in the Autumn Term 2022, and both focus on song. In preparation during the summer she has been enjoying the performances and insights of some great singers and accompanists, among them Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Ian Bostridge, Geoffrey Parsons, Gerald Moore and Alfred Brendel.

For MANCENT (https://mancent.org.uk/) she will discuss the two great Schubert song-cycles (Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise) on October 6th and 13th. There is much to discuss in the comparison of these two landmark works, in comparing the two and in relating them to Schubert’s life at the time.

In November she will turn her attention to Vaughan Williams and Verse for the Glossop Guild (https://www.glossopguild.org/autumn-zoom-2022). These two afternoon sessions (November 23rd and 30th) will consider the early songs and focus on the Songs of Travel, and then move on to the Serenade to Music, a unique and moving tribute to music and the friendships it engenders. This year is the 150th anniversary of Vaughan Williams’s birth, and it is timely to look again at his rôle in revitalising the musical setting of the English language.

Face-to-face talks are returning as well, and Rosemary will speak on The tip of the iceberg to a south Manchester group in early September. This talk investigates the story behind a selection of composers who are generally known only for a single work (including ‘Pachelbel’s Canon’ and ‘Widor’s Toccata’) and encourages us to be a little more adventurous in our listening.

The list of available topics is growing apace! Please get in touch if you would like to enquire about a presentation (face-to-face or on Zoom) to an interested group.
